Kedarkantha trek is located in Uttarakhand, bordering the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park, and is perfect for first-time hikers. Standing at an elevation of 3810 metres, the summit offers stunning panoramic views of iconic Himalayan ranges such as Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, and Ranglana from the Yamunotri and Gangotri belts. One of the key reasons for the trek’s fame is the summit-style climb. The Kedarkantha trail provides all the elements and thrills of a true peak expedition but in a beginner-friendly format. Trekkers set off before sunrise in freezing temperatures, using headlamps to light their way through the dimly lit morning.
Spanning 20+ kilometres over 5 days, this journey is well-suited for amateur trekkers. The adventure kicks off at Sankri village, a gateway to numerous trekking routes in Uttarakhand. The trail from Sankri meanders through dense Maple and Oak forests, crosses wooden bridges and gentle streams before reaching the first campsite — Juda-ka-Talab. The next stretch is more demanding as one proceeds towards Kedarkantha Base Camp, located 4 km ahead. Along the way, several meadows appear amidst the thick Oak cover. The forest is alive with rich biodiversity including Rhododendron trees, Chir Pines, and birds like Black Eagles and Golden Eagles.
From Kedarkantha Base Camp, trekkers are rewarded with sweeping 180-degree vistas of snow-clad peaks like Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, and Kalanag. The Kedarkantha summit itself can be seen glistening brilliantly, often brighter than the moon on snowy nights. The final climb to the top is exhilarating — steep gradients, strong winds, and sub-zero winter chills make it the most challenging segment. Yet, the all-encompassing experience it offers makes it worthy of being called a haven for adventure seekers. The trek is defined by serene lakeside camping spots, towering Oak and Pine trees, and mesmerizing snow-covered sceneries.
